Well, usually when unemployment is as high as it is, the incumbent loses, which is what I think a lot of people in the right were/are banking on.

Of course, that doesn't take into mind the unusual circumstances of the recession. Specifically the fact that voters overall put more blame on the Republicans (and Bush) for the recession than Obama.
