(KRON) — In what some are calling a “master class” in killing off a company mascot, language-learning app Duolingo announced Tuesday that its trademark mascot, “Duo,” aka “The Duolingo Owl,” is dead. In a post on X the company explained that “authorities are currently investigating the cause of death and we are cooperating fully.”
“Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know,” the post continued.
Duolingo said that they were aware Duo had “many enemies.”

“But we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments,” the company said. “If you feel inclined to share, please include your credit card number so we can automatically sign your up for Duolingo Max in his memory.”
“We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa’s privacy at this time,” the post continued.
“Til’ death duo part,” the pop star posted in response to the statement.

What does Dua Lipa have to do with Duo?
According to CNN, Duo being in love with Dua Lipa was part of the app’s brand lore.
“We’re just as shocked (and honored) as anyone that she’s acknowledged his tragic fate,” a Duolingo rep told CNN.
