Any techniques you feel like sharing, drop em here. Lets consolidate :wow:

Lately I been working on drums heavy, and I found a good way to get that crisp, punchy DJ Premier sound.

Seperate whatever drum loop you got into 2 tracks.... you're gonna run 1 of those tracks through a bass amp, preferably with an emphasis on deep, low end acoustics and reverb.

This give the drums a crisp, metallic texture. it ends up boosting the hi hats, but flattening the kick and snare.

2nd track gotta be compressed as a motherfukker. Obviously every break has to be treated differently, but I like to use a 7 1 1 ratio, at a -20 to -30 db volume. Thus, this 2nd layer doesnt change the texture, but it adds that punch to your kicks and snares.

Then you just add whatever drum sounds you got stashed.... put some funk into it :smugdraper:

hm...i was taught to keep the rhythm section... bass and drums... in the center but i still slightly pan everything except kicks. from -5 to 5, never more, it makes the beat move better
if its a full song, it ends up with just the kick and lead vocal going up the middle

i never use side compression or ducking, it really doesnt work for my style. i make bass and kicks work together in their own frequency ranges.
and again i pan the bass line slightly away from the kick...like right beside

if i have chops that dont touch for whatever reason, and dont want to change the speed ill use reverb and delay to fill in spaces

if you like obnoxious compression, get audio damage's rough rider. its free, one of my favorite effects

Instead of using a pre-existing break, break down the break and layer it with your own kicks, snares and hats then remove the original break so you can ride the groove. You can also add in percussion that didn't exist for a cleaner break rather than layer or insert your drums over a pre-existing loop.

its the musicians equivalent of

im a huge fan of ny compression style, but i never did a lot to the dry signal. im going to try the bass amp thing.

Having trouble with kick and bass clashing filter the bass into a two or three different bands...find where its clashing fix it with eq/ and or sidechain
( that way the side chain only ducks the clashing frequencies and not the whole signal)or just use BX Dyn eq....buss the two bands to a new bass track then buss the kick and new bass track to its own track compress distort enjoy

Another one.. don't add 808's in the mix until you've finished everything. Cause that shyt will distract from the other sonic ingredients, especially if you're layering over bass tones.
