I believe its standalone, but it makes references to 1 & 2. 11 imo is an amazing starting point to DQ. Easily a top 3 JRPG from last-gen.

DQ3 is THE classic game in the series. It’s one of the most influential games of all time and the game that started DQ’s massive popularity in Japan.

And yea you should play DQXI. They haven’t missed with a mainline DQ game and XI is easily one of the best in the series.

DQ11 was dope I beat it on Switch a few months ago. Definitely worth a shot if you're interested
