What is a Divestor
A divestor, in the context of Black women's social and dating culture, refers to women who distance themselves from certain aspects of the Black community, particularly toxic behaviors and norms. This can include avoiding relationships with Black men who are seen as toxic, rejecting the "strong Black woman" trope, and prioritizing self-care and personal growth. Some divestors also date outside their race and may avoid what they perceive as negative cultural norms within the Black community, such as single motherhood or a focus on rap music.178
However, the term "divestor" has been used and interpreted in various ways, leading to confusion and debate. Some view it as a movement for self-improvement and empowerment, while others criticize it as a form of anti-Blackness or white supremacy, especially when it involves pedestalizing non-Black men.58
In a business context, a divestor is an entity that disposes of assets, such as through sale, exchange, closure, or bankruptcy, often to focus on core business operations or to comply with regulatory requirements.3
The term "divest" generally means to deprive or dispossess of property, authority, or title, and can also refer to the act of undressing or stripping oneself of something
