Your dreams
No. And dont braid it too tight, especially crown and hairline...

It protects/retains length but doesnt aod in growing hair. Your hair will grow at its own rate. If there was a magic hair growth style/treatment/serum we would be all like that boondocks bomb creamy crack hair episode.

.
Low manipulation leads to less damage and less breakage, so the hair grows at the same rate, you just retain the growth

This the closest picture I could find of what I want but it's not exact. I cut and fade my own hair. On some different braiding style videos, I see the hair stylist use like gel.

No, it helps retention. But for some people with weak hair, it actually makes more hair to shed especially if it is braided really tight.

not combing ur hair makes it grow faster because u aren't constantly breaking hair off by combing/brushing it

braids as a result can't be brushed/combed so it would create the same effect

its the reason why a black girl whose hair doesn't grow past her shoulders would have hair down to her knees if she grew dreadlocs

@ba'al

Products that you need in general:
Clarifying shampoo

Conditioner (wash-out)

Leave-in conditioner (this is a cream-type product you use on your hair to retain moisture)

Oil (hair grease works but try finding an oil with ceramides and not just petroleum jelly)

In general, following this order should retain length (online folks call it the LCO method). I wear my hair somewhat similarly to that pic you posted, but with much smaller braids.

Appreciate the info. Yeah I've been growing my hair out for a minute kinda been experimenting. Plan on rocking twists, braids, and braids out.

Trying to get my hair to look like this I got lucky one time and did it right but after a while my hair nap back up which is cool but I want to be able to go between styles from the nappy fro with the fade to the curly hair. I don't plan on bleaching it blonde though

Most natural hair folks call that style a twistout or braidout. However, the look of the hair in these styles is very variable. It depends on hair texture. Some folks' hair just grows like this. Humidity, porosity of hair, hair products used, and dye used. Dyeing hair does loosen hair texture (aka damage hair) for most people.

There is also a style called 'straw set' that involves wrapping one's hair around straws or flexirods to develop a curly-coily style. However, this is also more time consuming. This does look more similar to the guy's hair tbh. Maybe he used perm rollers as well. Or maybe his hair has a looser texture (what is called '3c hair' on youtube).

Edit: Green Beauty has pretty informational videos about natural hair. She goes into detail about what should be done for natural hair, and she doesn't just talk about styling. This is her channel: GreenBeauty

1. hair that separates into small ringlets (3c or 3c/4a)
2. Products that define curls. These aren't like a chemical process (jheri curl) but they work on a temporary basis.

This styling doesn't work on every hair type.

One curl defining product that many people (with this hair texture) like is the Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I don't know about many of these products (I don't have this kind of hair) but they are very popular. I would recommend also trying this style before you plan to go out with it, because results vary with technique.

edit: what it would probably look like on your hair texture (from the basketball guy):
