'SLY' GREEN DESCRIBED AS BLOODTHIRSTY BOASTED ABOUT GANG, PROSECUTOR TELLS COURT

'SLY' GREEN DESCRIBED AS BLOODTHIRSTY BOASTED ABOUT GANG, PROSECUTOR TELLS COURT

Donald "Sly" Green was a wild, violent and ambitious man who was proud of the bloodshed his gang caused on Buffalo's East Side, a prosecutor said during closing arguments Wednesday in federal court.

Green was so wild that, during a high-speed car chase, he once tried to leap from the car he was riding in to the car of "Fat Richard," a rival drug dealer he was chasing, Assistant U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. said.

While serving time in state prison for murder in 1991, Green showed a fellow inmate press clippings about drive-by shootings and other crimes in Buffalo, the prosecutor told jurors at Green's drug-racketeering trial.

"He would show the clippings and say, 'These are my guys. This is what they're doing,' " Hochul said.

Hochul said evidence in the seven-week trial showed that Green was carefully plotting to make a $50 million cocaine fortune for himself.

Jurors were to hear the other side of the story from defense lawyers today. Deliberations against Green and his three co-defendants are expected to begin Monday. U.S. District Judge John T. Curtin said the jurors will be sequestered in a hotel while they deliberate.

Hochul said the tapes played during the trial of Green barking out orders over a prison phone, combined with testimony from a dozen former gang associates, should convince jurors that Green and his co-defendants -- David "Dave Dog" Williams, Jens "Chauncey" Jamison and Deron "DD" Rogers -- are guilty.

Attorneys for all four defendants deny the allegations, saying their clients were set up by criminals who lied on the stand to receive plea deals.

Although most of the testimony focused on Green, Hochul claimed the evidence also proves the following about his co-defendants:

Jamison, 27, was a shooter and drug-runner for the gang. Hochul said witnesses identified Jamison as a killer of James Bolden, slain in a drive-by shooting in December 1989, and as being involved in the attempt to kill James Wright, a witness against Green in a murder case, in August 1989.

Police believe an Uzi assault rifle, purchased by Jamison at a pawn shop five days earlier, was used to kill Bolden.

Witnesses identified Jamison as the "right-hand man" to Daryl "Reese" Johnson, a former enforcer for the gang who had a falling-out with Green in 1991.

Rogers, 35, was one of Green's busiest and most trusted cocaine dealers. Witnesses said Rogers was host to a meeting in December 1991 attended by members of "the commission, a ruling council of drug dealers." Witnesses who were at the meeting said Rogers and several other dealers discussed plans for murdering "Reese" Johnson.

Williams, 32, who ran a Buffalo construction firm, attended the meeting with two bodyguards wearing black ski masks. Hochul said Williams was described as a "financier, providing money, advice and drugs to the gang."
