Do you think the stereotype of southerners being intolerant holds any weight?

People tend to associate the south with racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-semitism and a general dislike of everyone who isn't like them. Do you think that its fair to assume that (especially if you're a black man) that if you go down to a southern state that you will generally not feel welcome?

Considering the racist history of the south and this country, It's safe to assume anything as a black person. IMO

very little. Racism in the north is more abundant and more covert.

Really depends on the part you go to. I'm from Alabama and I have NEVER experienced blatant "****** go back to africa" type sentiments. My dad was born in 45' and grew up there and told about this one time these white dudes in a pickup truck chased him after a carnival or something. Can't remember why they did it but back then, there was just blatant disrespect of us. They didn't hide behind keyboards and talk shyt over dinner like they do today. There was this one time I was at work and going to break around christmas 09. Went to my car and noticed I left my keys in my locker. Saw this yukon with a white girl and her mom inside. Didn't pay much attention to it (then). Went back inside to get my keys and came back out. As I approached my car, I noticed they had moved closer to me for w/e reason and were just idling in a few parking spots over. Got in my car and started it up and they took off. It occured to me a little while later that they were thinking that I was about to break into a car (christmas time) and steal some shyt. I know when I'm being looked at and trust, they were ready to call 911. They may have even been on the phone, can't remember...

You'll never get a real census on that. I'm in the south right now and there's not too many counts of racism/homophobia etc. I've seen (I think I've seen more of it when I was in NY). I

Anyway ain't know telling what the "tolerant" are really all about behind close doors.
