Do you play your drums live or program them?

I been programming since I started making beats, but lately Ive been dissatisfied with quantized drums :ehh:

Sometimes you find the pulse of a sample right away, and it's just a matter of finding the perfect sounds. But what's the fun in that? music is more then the some of its parts. Ive always respected Alchemist, cause the dude comes with some gnarly ass grooves, you just know he laid the shyt down organically :wow:

Yea thats how you find the natural groove. If you have a controller with your kicks and snares laid out, or an mpc or maschine or something thats how you bang out the drums naturally to get that instrument feel. Otherwise like you said its more programming. You can groove it out first then program it and quantize it to get it just right, but its a right brain left brain, instrument vs technical type of deal.

it all reverts back to the computer software vs hardware argument. pointing, clicking and dragging is technical, not musical. thats why a lot of the music doesnt have the same feel. but with software and controllers you can definitely bang shyt out.

I usually use a hi-hat sample thats programmed as a substitute to the metronome, I usually find my groove thru the snare, than I go back and punch in the hi-hat to compensate the snare and I find the the kick is the most flexible and fun to implement so that usually is last. Than I take like 5 hours trying to find a fukking sample that fit's it lol, not literally but it sure feels like it.....I mean I know you can sample anything but if you are as particular as I am, you'll relate to the struggle lol.....
