Do You Hate It When A Movie Takes Place In A Certain City But DOESN'T Shoot There?

I'm tired of all these fake new yorks breh
that's one of my movie pet peeves. the film takes place in new york and its shot in fukkin toronto its rare these days that a film which takes place in NY is actually shot on location

or it takes place in california but its shot in vancouver

fukk outta here you hack directors if you're gonna set a movie in a place then fukkin shoot it there. don't use low-rent stand-ins for iconic places

¨Paramount wanted to shoot the godfather 1 in hollywood and not new york. Can you imagine if coppola did not insist to shoot that film in new york? He literally fought against them to shoot the actual ny parts in new york and to cast brando and pacino. They wanted robert redford to play Michael. I guess they want a movie to be shot quick and make money and the director has to work with what he has (most of the time)

Depends. I don't mind it most of the time because some cities are expensive to shoot in and you may not have the budget. In a perfect world it would be great to set a movie in Chicago and shoot in Chicago but if you don't have the cash then you can't. You can always shoot your exteriors in the city for establishing shots and landmarks

I understand that, i'm just saying, it ANNOYS me. especially when I know the city so well, it takes me right out of the movie when I see some fake ass NY

its funny you mention godfather as i'm watching the trilogy right now. the real locations they shot in, whether it was NYC, sicily, miami, nevada, etc. add SO much authenticity to it. imagine it all being on some fake ass hollywood set wouldn't even be the same movies

It used to piss me off when movies and shows were set in Chicago but were filmed in Canada because it was too expensive to film here. I'm so glad that isn't the issue so much anymore.
