Obviously most or us grew up with the American version of Goku who was unquestionably a hero. And in the fight with Frieza stated he was the the hope of the universe, defender of peace and ally to good. Essentially Goku was what Superman was to the Golden generation to Millenials. All the way down to a no kill policy.
Until I saw Dragon Ball and dude caught more bodies than Punisher. Which was weird but I just thought it as because he was a youth.
Now years later with the release of Kai a Mich closer adaption to the Manga and with the release of Super, Goku true demeanor has been revealed as a buffoon who just loves fighting and according to Toriyama himself has no real affection with his family due to his Saiyan heritage. That's why he doesn't spend time with his wife, doesnt care about Gohan or Goten because they aren't fighters. Goku likely has more feelings for Vegeta
than his "family" because Vegeta makes him stronger.
Ok you say, hes a bit apathetic and fights to get stronger but he has saved the earth many times. However consider that the only reason earth has ever been in danger is because of Gokus own actions.
The only reason he didnt destroy the planet is because he bonked his head. The only reason Raditz came to earth was because he was on earth. The only reason Cell and the androids came along was because Goku slaughtered the Red Ribbon army. Goku would rather humor Vegeta than prevent Buu from being born. Super is just a series of events where Goku endangers multiple universes to fight strong guys.
This all culminates in Goku releasing the DB version of Hitler and ****spoiler*******.........we see Frieza at the end of DB Super Broly going back to committing genocide and enslaving planets again. Even Vegeta has the moral foresight to scold Goku for this.
Now given all this would you consider Goky and Hero or Villian?

Goku's most significant absences before Cell were 1) Because he was dead for a year AFTER TRYING TO PROTECT GOHAN and 2) when he stayed in space for a year to learn how to control his SSJ transformation because it had his emotions fukked up. In other words, he didn't trust himself around his son. But from what we see, Goku's an affectionate father when he's around and he and Gohan hang out a lot.
