Do you believe films/series are more powerful when the cast is made up of unknowns??

The only genre I'd say this is true is Horror; everything else it depends on the content/actors really

Answer honestly when you saw this picture did you think Leo Dicaprio or Jordan Belfort.

I guess it really does depend on the performance. I believe MOST people - even if they've seen the movie - would think Leo Dicaprio.

However....

I believe most people in THIS case would see Tony Montana, not Al Pacino.

It's an interesting discussion, sometimes the role depends on the actors past work to be effective. The actors baggage reflects the current role in a complimentary or contrary way. Deniro in meet the parents is a prime example of this. This kind of thing has been going on forever. Richard Burbage played a lot of the heroes in the original runs of Shakespeare's plays. Audiences would clue in on this and recognize a character as heroic right away because he was playing the role.

I like that you brought up Pacino playing Tony Montana. I'd argue that part of the reason he is so effective in that role is the contrast it provides to his Michael Corleone. It's almost like Scarface says "oh you thought Michael Corleone was an example of vicious unbridled capitalism? check this guy out"

Do you find it easier to buy into a character without having seen him/her in anything else prior?

Definitely so. Even good to great actors start to lose some credibility if you see them in a lot of roles. I like Christian Bale a lot but I think he was the wrong choice for Moses :yeshrug:

Foreign/indie films absolutely shyt on most mainstream films wit "big" stars by far imo.

Soooooo many great films dat are slept on. :whew:

Shows too. Da original British version of The Office is a great example of an relatively unknown cast dat ended up being one of da GOAT shows. :ehh:
