I don't think i've seen this option outlined before at all...but at the same time, there aren't amazing sites like Cot's Baseball Contracts for the other major sports that gives you the rundown on past & present player contracts (includes bonuses, deferred money, who the agent is, etc.)

You look at a contract like the classic Bobby Bonilla deal, or another one like Manny Ramirez's over the years -

From the LA Dodgers contract 2009-2010 ($25MM in '09, $20MM in '10)
$30M deferred without interest:
  • 2009: $10M paid ’09 and $15M in 3 installments of $5M each June 30, 2010-12
  • 2010 (if no opt out): $5M paid in 2010 and $15M in 3 installments of $3,333,333 each June 30, 2011-12, and $8,333,333 on June 30, 2013

From the 8yr/$160MM Red Sox contract:
  • $31M deferred ($3M in 2001, $4M each in 2002-08), paid in 16 installments of $1.94M, 2011-26

Albert Pujols also has one with STL that goes from 2020-2029 at $1.7MM a year.

:wow:

I'd do the same damn thing.
