Don't spices have like a 3 to 5 year shelf life? People don't go through a jar of spices in that time frame? Clumping just has to do with moisture getting in it.
My go to stuff i burn through quickly, but i have others that can take some time to make it through. Way i see it, spices just lose their potency over time, but never really expire.

OP..

Just learned something...

Read that spices don't go bad, but they can become no good. Typically , spices last a couple of years, but some older shelved spices can be revived using different methods.

I gotta pantry plus second kitchen counter full of spices, so I know that I have some expired spices.

yeah, eventually they just taste like sprinkling flavorless sawdust on your food. but i wouldn't say it ever tastes spoiled

:manny: I throw mine out, it’s usually clumped up by that time. For most of my seasonings, I use it all so it never expires. But the exotic seasonings I have to double Check

Potency loss comes down to proper storage. The containers with the silicone sealing rings tend to work best. Clumping, same thing...and on the off chance it happens, you can just use a marble mortar and pestle to loosen it up.

Yes spices go bad.

If you buy pre ground spices, they will clump from moisture, lose potency and the oils in the spices will go rancid.

For best results buy whole spices and grind yourself. That way your spices will last for quite a while.
Whole black pepper corn
Whole cinnamon sticks
Whole cloves
Whole all spice
Whole coriander seed etc
