lol oh those Gerald Green days when the TD GArden was like half empty? Doc has always been a really good coach back to his MAgic days, even though it was overboard for him to win COTY, but he needed great players and a great supporting cast, which happened in Boston and it has worked. Doc has always been a really good coach even before the C's won that ring, so he is cool in my book.
With that said, who else was gonna take the blame of Green, Telfair and others not panning out if Ainge's job was secure? They had a lot of prospects with high potential who weren't winning anything at all, and not showing much signs of improvement (outside of Big Al/Perk/Rondo really). Yet, Ainge still parlayed it into KG and Ray, before it was fully exposed that Green/Telfair had a long way to go (and still do, frankly).
Celts fans had their gripes, from playing Mark Blount enough to earn himself a big contract (Ainge also to blame) and starting him or LaFrentz over Big Al/Perk throughout the season
, Wally Scissors over Tony Allen, to being just generally poor X's and O's. Wyc Grousbeck/Danny Ainge were always going to be patient with Doc and Ainge's plan though, so I think Doc would have gotten at least another year, or two, after his first two with the Celtics no matter what happened during that offseason (if we got Oden, Durant or Ray/KG).
He got much better X's and O's offensively with better talent. It is what it is. Either way, hes been superb ever since we got the Big 3. His rotations have been great too. He improved a ton defensively ever since we hired Thibodeau and it has since, pretty much, stayed the same since his departure. He's one of the best coaches in the league right now, and I don't see why players wouldn't want to play for him if given the opportunity. I could see him coaching Team USA someday.
