I watched 90s movies this weekend and wondered when the last time I’ve seen a strong film with a Black cast, outside of Black Panther.
The 90s saw a lot of creativity and opportunities for actors and actresses of all tiers, but 2000s-on Beyonce, Rihanna, T.I., Alicia Keys, etc. began their careers and acting debuts-while I’m not sure they “stole” spots, they def stunk up movies with performances I can’t help but think actual actors would have done better.
Outside of Ava DuVernay and Tyler Perry (who is terrible but prominent), I barely hear of names of Black directors. Spike isn’t active, Nat Parker is finished, and I can’t think of anyone else besides Ryan Coogler, who isn’t even close to being a household name. Issa Rae and Lena Waithe, while talented, only have a single work to their names.
Will Smith is the exception, not the rule. Iirc he started off acting anyway. Queen Latifah is decent, but def appears in awful movies.
Is Black Hollywood no longer bankable?
