He didn't produce the album version. The version that's on the album and was released as a single was in fact produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Janet got a co-production.

we know about the official credits

Got 'til It's Gone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Production of "Got 'til It's Gone" was officially credited to Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. However, the hip hop collective The Ummah (composed of Q-Tip, J Dilla, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad) contest that they are the actual producers of the track. In an interview, J Dilla himself stated that he, Q-Tip, and Muhammad produced the original after Jackson met Q-Tip on the set of the 1993 film Poetic Justice.

it clearly sounds like a Dilla/Ummah track

I heard Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis redid the beat for Janet's album. Still a shady move.

More likely situation.

It might seem shady, but it probably happens often. Like an artist not liking what one producer did with the sample and getting another artist to redo. Except, they want to keep elements that they liked from the first while adding some new elements.

That still doesn't prove that Janet, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis stole the beat or that Dilla produced the one that was officially released.

obviously if there was "proof" we wouldn't be gossiping about it. it seems the parties involved knew they got jerked, and knew they couldn't do anything about it (or didn't care since they got paid)

Dilla and The Ummah claim to have produced the track, and it sounds like their work. I'm not claiming to have any further evidence

I mean you're not gonna get definite proof man. It sounds like Dilla and the Ummah, who all say they did it. So many people get jerked in this industry. Producers get jacked all the time, even super famous ones.

The fact that they threw the Jay Dee's Revenge mix along with another Ummah remix on the 12" promo suggests that something was sorted out, at least.

On that note, the Ummah and Jay Dee pre-98 are unfairly slept on.
