don't get me wrong. I dig the style and vibe of 90's r&b, and I love me some weeknd n/h but when comparing oldschool r&b from the 60's and 70's to new school r&b its just no contest really..

r&b was all but dead in the 80's, but then hip hop blew up, a contemporary style of r&b called new jack swing was created and the rest was history. hip hop has had a MASSIVE influnece on modern r&b. from the 90's on they were inextricably linked. remember when it was the hot thing to have r&b singers on the hook in hip hop? or a rapper spit a verse on an r&b single? I mean, its still like that, ain't shyt change. nowadays you have r&b singers with profane lyrics, singing glorified punchlines.

would r&b have been better off without the [demonic] influence of hip hop or did hip hop simply give it new vitality?

I feel if it stayed contemporary it would have been fine, like the lyrics was still great but it made it much easier to dance to.

I think it was the other way around

I grew up during that era so my favorite R&B tracks were from that time

I think everyone trying to be a LL Cool J type lovey dovey nikka had a worse impact on hip hop than R&B, new jack swing came and went but the Ja Rule/Drake era never left

Honestly I think in an attempt to maintain relevance R&B killed itself.
Slowly being cannibalized by Hip Hop as the years went on until
we got to the point that "Chris Brown" and "Frank Ocean" are
considered "Hip Hop" even though they clearly do not make Hip Hop music.

Ja rule and Drake are nothing alike

Ja rule was singing on hooks just like every other rapper. He just so happened to blow up with that formula.

Drake is actually harmonizing and shyt. Ja Rule never made HOWGH

And what you said has nothing to do with the OP

No, music videos ruined R&B.

Once the focus shifted from artists who could really sing to artists who could dance or looked good on the television, R&B was ruined.

The rise of hip-hop just happened to coincide with the rise of Music Television (pun intended). That's why it looks like hip-hop was the culprit when in fact it was a shift in record company incentives.

I actually think 90's r&b had a good balance - you had r Kelly, joe, case, jagged edge, Deborah cox, faith, Mary, next, ideal, etc who all balanced rap features and uptempo songs with power ballads. Things didn't really die until 06-07 IMO where damn near every song needed a rap feature and/or dudes just started talking extra grimy in their songs.

Came in to say this.

R&B killed itself trying to be hip-hop.
Rap used to be over here, and R&B was over there...and everyone was fine with that.
Then we got to this "urban/black music" hybrid instead.

i like the 90's R&B.
But it's basically the same type of music the Backstreet Boys made.
They just wasnt considered R&B cause they where white.
But to me, it clearly sounds like R&B.

Soul era was the best era of R&B though. So much better than New Jack Swing.
