don't get me wrong. I dig the style and vibe of 90's r&b, and I love me some weeknd n/h but when comparing oldschool r&b from the 60's and 70's to new school r&b its just no contest really..

r&b was all but dead in the 80's, but then hip hop blew up, a contemporary style of r&b called new jack swing was created and the rest was history. hip hop has had a MASSIVE influnece on modern r&b. from the 90's on they were inextricably linked. remember when it was the hot thing to have r&b singers on the hook in hip hop? or a rapper spit a verse on an r&b single? I mean, its still like that, ain't shyt change. nowadays you have r&b singers with profane lyrics, singing glorified punchlines.

would r&b have been better off without the [demonic] influence of hip hop or did hip hop simply give it new vitality?

I can't say it ruined it but I definitely did not like the trend where every lead single had to have some rapper on it. I mean every once in a while it's cool but man there was a streak in the 2000's where an R&B artists couldn't drop a single without a rapper all over it. Other than that I don't think hip-hop in general has been a bad influence.
