DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means.

“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.

no wonder unemployment is so high up there. not only depressing, this is enough to make one angry.

this isn't even about who's taking advantage of them. why are THEY illiterate? why is 50% of a major us. city's population unable to read and write. that shyt is crazy.

Why spend the money especially given their financial situation? Keep stripping away from elementary/high school education and this is what happens.

Nah bruh don't blame money on that shyt. Thats a lack of trying. Functionally literate in America is like being able to read and comprehend a children's book. Now I'm not saying that doesn't help but its some kind of culture there that clearly makes it ok to be a dumbass.

Its a combination of many things.

2. You

4. School

Nah, it doesn't ALL fall on the families. You really think HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people out there are somewhat going to be the exception to the country? Think about that for a second.

NO, but do you expect 100% of people to follow the rules? If you have a system in which is not looking over the education system and holding parents accountable...what do you think will happen? I have talked about this in Higher Learning as well, if you have a situation in which people feel like they are not being taken care of things will turn sour fast.

Pull some of the things I am sure to hear in Detroit and you as a parent would get your shyt pushed in by the local government QUICK in any major city in the U.S.

This falls on the leaders of Detroit first, then the parents and then ultimately the kids. Given Detroit's financial issues, I seriously doubt they had the manpower to start checking all these parents when their kids would cut or skip school all together...it kept spiraling out of control.

Plus, I doubt the number was that high when Detroit still had a million plus people living up there. Most of the people that are stuck in Detroit are the ones that can't get out and unfortunately not literate enough to really make a living anywhere else in the country.

I blame the parents...all parents should be reading to thier seeds everynite and later teaching them how to read..so by the time they get into school they'll be adequate enough or ahead..

That's why @Phoenix_Knightly23 and my kid won't have that problem..we're gonna raise our son/daughter right...right Bae?
