Ramey, who launched an organization called
Auut Studio to carry the project forward, particularly wants to reach young students. “I thought, why doesn’t Auut Studio create that lesson plan that my teachers never thought to give us, or maybe never knew about,” he says.
“This is our history. Every high school kid should know about it.”
This is a shameful part of the American history every person should know about.

For anyone wondering: most scholars believe the numbers in the southwest are MUCH higher than officially recorded, and therefore probably much higher than shown here. Many lynchings which took place in the SW were not recorded the way they were in the Deep South, and a lot of the time the race of a given person wasn’t marked or was marked erroneously (usually this becomes a problem with Mexicans and Native Americans who were lynched – but also there’s the issue of various ethnic “whites” who were lynched at the time).
“From 1848 to 1928, mobs murdered thousands of Mexicans, though surviving records allowed us to clearly document only about 547 cases. These lynchings occurred not only in the southwestern states of Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas, but also in states far from the border, like Nebraska and Wyoming. […]
Southern blacks were the group most often targeted, but comparing the histories of the South and the West strengthens our understanding of mob violence in both. In today’s charged debate over immigration policy and the growth of the Latino population, the history of anti-Mexican violence reminds us of the costs and consequences of hate.”

The numbers reflected in this map could easily be several thousand people more across a variety of ethnicities, but this is (from what I understand) only the deaths on remaining record.
