My dad has schizophrenia, and I've had friends with family members with schizophrenia. It's always a combination of taking the wrong meds, doctors over-prescribing and then the patient refusing to take the meds. Then things go downhill fast.

Your uncle was probably taking quetiapine. That's the drug that basically turns them into nothing but zombies. My dad's old doctor gave him a combination of quetiapine and trazodone. I've found a lot of psychiatrists don't do anything besides over-prescribe. If you have a family member with schizophrenia, keep a log of the medication they take and the side effects that come with it. That's the only way you'll know if something is working. If the doctor doesn't do anything besides over-prescribe, it's time to switch doctors or check your family member into the hospital. The best part about the hospital is that they usually have outpatient programs with competent psychiatrists. The psychiatrists that our family doctor referred him to were completely incompetent.

I also recommend to ask about Clozaril. It's the only drug that worked for my dad without turning him into a zombie, and he's been close to "normal" (knock on wood) for 5 years. If you're in Canada, you can apply for ODSP to cover for the cost of medicine and if needed, housing with a personal support worker. The only downside of Clozaril is that for some, it might effect their immune system so each month you have to get a blood test to make sure your immune system is fine.

Yeah my uncle has schizophrenia but he’s been good for awhile but has never been able to work. He will still like wash dishes like five times and stuff and shake someone’s hand for 5 minutes but much better then he was years ago

Glad to hear your uncle is fine now.

I wouldn't recommend sending someone with schizophrenia to work anyways. Too many issues to think about. As long as they have a routine and purpose and they're taking the right medication and complying, that is enough

Yeah if you live in PG County then you prolly ran into this nikka at some point. Last time I seen him was like a year and a half ago right around my way in Fort Washington in front of the tobacco shop/Chinese Carryout. The way one of the articles described it, sounds like he had a house on the side of my neighborhood that’s on the river where the rich nikkaz at. He seemed ok when I seen him, but the gear he had on didn’t exactly LOOK like he had been in the NBA.

Shame. He’ll end up in St. E’s at this rate, don’t let him go to the city lunched out like this slim gon be lookin down MLK Blvd through a window with a straitjacket. Prayers up frfr.

Man this is sad. I watched my mom come back from a psychosis like this so it’s possible but she almost died before we were able to get her help. Then it took years and several specialists for her to get right but she’s good now and is even off the meds.

My brother on the other hand...lives in the shelter system cuz he refuses meds...had NBA potential too but at least he’s safe and not on the streets.

Mental illness is no joke.

Folks from DC have to explain this to me. Between him and Francis, at least Steve will always have love in Houston to not go hungry. Beasley seemed to be one bad injury away from having the same fate.

Honestly it’s just the luck of the draw I guess. Wink (Steve) ain’t sick in the head tho, he just been through a lot and be drinking iirc. Ain’t seen him in ages tho. Vontae and Vernon Davis’ Bro had mental issues he ended up killin someone in Northwest with a 2x4 to the head or some wild shyt.

I’ve always heard the urban myth that DC got a lot of mentally ill people in the streets because people from other parts of the country come out here on some crazy mission to the president type shyt and once it don’t work out they just end up out here on the streets. I dunno how true that is but it always was a convenient explanation for why DC has a big ass mental hospital in Southeast (St. Elizabeth’s).

I can definitely say that I run into mentally ill people every so often at my job. It’s worse when they drugged out on hop or some shyt, end up jumpin and screamin like a Kriss Kross video.

Delonte West photos troubling for player with history of mental illness

that's from back in 2016, he's been wandering around like this for a while and money isn't the entire answer. The league needs to step in and help that man, whether they've already tried to or not.
My brother is schizophrenic. Really not much you can do for them outside of forced detainment if they break the law. If they don’t want to take their meds, this is America, you can’t make them. My brother is full manic like Delonte when he isn’t on meds. And he doesn’t like the meds, they essentially make him fat, sleepy and destroy his personality. I hate to see him both on and off meds. I wish there were more health facilities to deal with mental illness, but they’ve been slashing mental health budgets for years now.
