SPRING VALLEY — Police say a local woman charged with murdering her newborn son confessed, telling them she didn’t want the baby and had hidden the pregnancy from her relatives and housemates.
Maria Oliva Guaman-Guaman, 23, of 41 North Myrtle Ave. in Spring Valley is being held without bail in the county jail after being arraigned Tuesday night in Spring Valley Justice Court on a charge of second-degree murder.
“Today is a sad day. We’re all parents. I cannot fathom killing a newborn child,” Spring Valley Police Chief Paul Modica said Wednesday at a news conference detailing the arrest. He added, “We always see the worst in people. It doesn’t get much worse than this.”
Modica said Guaman-Guaman may have thought she could not afford another child. She has a 2 1/2-year-old daughter, who was put in foster care early Wednesday morning, hours after her arrest.
Guaman-Guaman was arrested Tuesday by Spring Valley police. She is accused of strangling her newborn and dumping the baby’s body in a recycling bin outside a convenience store on North Myrtle Avenue, just a short walk from her house.
The infant — later dubbed Baby Angel by police — was found hours later on Nov. 12 at Brookfield Recycling in Elmsford. The baby’s umbilical cord was still attached, leading police to believe he was killed shortly after his birth.
Guaman-Guaman worked at a bakery in an industrial complex in Hillburn and had previously worked as a domestic for an Orthodox Jewish family, police said. She lived with her extended family, which included a total of five adults and seven children who apparently never realized she was pregnant.
Police believe the baby was both born and killed at Guaman-Guaman’s home.
Guaman-Guaman family members who shared the house expressed deep sorrow that the young woman did not confide in them.
“I would have helped her with this baby,” said her brother Luis Guaman, 26. “I helped her pay her rent and utlities when she was pregnant with (her daughter.)”
A visibly upset Juan Guaman, her 40-year-old uncle, said his niece would often come home late from work and make him dinner.
