Philly took the whole soul genre from Detroit since the 70s & ran with the crown….crazy how the most violent places in America are known for some of the greatest love making songs of the last few generations lol

Chicago and Curtis Mayfield started that soul in late 60s

It’s most def Philly. Dilla was the architect of the sound but I see that as more of a Premo situation. He was from Texas but set the standard in and for New York

The soulquarians pretty much owned neo soul and they usually recorded in either Philly or Detroit so either one of those could be called the home of said genre...

That's not entirely true. A lot went down at Electric Lady as mentioned before

Philly had the Roots, Bilal, Flowetry, and Jill Scott. Detroit got Dilla, Slum Village, Elzhi, Dwele, Kem, Amp Fiddler, Foregin Exchange, Black Milk, Binary Star, Kareem Riggins, etc

Good Matchup
Philly has the Roots, Bilal, Floetry, Musiq, Jill Scott, Amel Larruex, Jazzy Jeff, Jaguar Wright, The Jazzyfat Nastees, etc etc and it’s not a good matchup

That new Detroit soul Dwele type shyt was just a continuation of what they had been doing in Philly for years.

Not taking anything away from your argument, but if we're referring to the same Foreign Exchange, that's Phonte from Durham NC and Nicolay from the Netherlands. They linked up via Okayplayer back in the day. Right around the same time I got into college and stumbled upon :hamster:
My bad I was thinking of another group

Common, Badu, Royce 59 and countless others recorded at Dillas crib in 1990’s Detroit before he moved to LA

Common just brought out Dillas mom at the Detroit Jazz Festival last Sunday and he said Detroit was the birth of Neo soul
