Canadian star David Lemieux (34-2, 31KOs) accomplished a career goal this past Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal. In a sensational fight, Lemieux picked up the vacant IBF middleweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Hassan N'Dam, who went down four times in the contest.
While fans are now screaming for a unification with WBA/IBO champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya confirms that Lemieux's first obligation is to make a mandatory defense of his IBF crown.
"First thing is first. Lemieux just won the title and he has to make a mandatory defense. We obviously gave plans for Lemiuex. We want to fight Golovkin. It's not going to be this year. Obviously Golovkin has no dancing partner. In the mean time he can go to 168 and challenge Andre Ward or Carl Froch if he wants. But David Lemieux does want to fight him. I think it will be a very interesting fight, two power punchers. It will be an explosive fight, but right now [the mandatory] is first," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com.
As far as Lemieux's return? De La Hoya plans to sit down with the fighter's manager, Camille Estephan, to discuss the possible options for the fall. One scenario that De La Hoya likes, is Lemieux defending his title on the pay-per-view undercard of the highly anticipated showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
"He just won the title, he's going to take some time off. We're going to sit down with Camille, his manager, in the next couple of weeks. We should know where the IBF is at and take it from there. We can see, for instance, Lemieux fighting on the undercard of Canelo-Cotto when that gets made," De La Hoya said.
