Obviously "grounded" earth-based detective work is just code word for budget friendly :mjlol:

The elephant in the room about a live-action GL production has always been budget. Everything either has to be CGI or massive set pieces with a ton of costume work for every alien species.

How do you mitigate that? Keep them fukkers on earth and talkin to humans :pachaha:
That's why a live action GL can never truly work unless they have a massive budget.

An IP like Green Lantern is in a tough spot because it's not popular/proven enough mainstream-wise for studios to feel comfortable pouring in the money required to properly adapt it. The recent failures/box office bombs from super hero IPs probably has them even more hesitant.

As is, most casuals to the comics (who make up like 98% of movie goers, globally) probably only know John and Hal, with a vague understanding that Kilowog is the man-pig alien bro and Sinestro is the bad guy.

So i can sort of see the vision in that they want to win us over on John and Hal w/o breaking the bank, and then if the characters (and Gunn's Superman) prove lucrative, probably up the budget for a true space adventure.
