It kind of feels like they are. MCU acknowledges the death of people, but it's played off like it isn't a big deal since the movies are kid friendly. In MOS it felt like they paid attention to the total chaos a superhuman can be and made death seem important (it shows with the fact they offed Zod).
BVS looks like it's going to be gritty too. I guess with the success of the Nolan Trilogy, DCCU might go in this direction, or at least pick at it.
