1. A.J. Green vs. Giants secondary
A.J. Green, the Bengals star second-year wide receiver, didnt pull any punches this week when he said the Giants defense has "a lot of holes." And he has a point. The Giants rank 26th against the pass (264.3 yards per game) and have surrendered big days to stars (Vincent Jackson), unknowns (Kevin Ogletree) and tight ends (Jason Witten). But Green may be the best the Giants have faced so far this season. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder is tied for the NFL lead with eight receiving touchdowns, is sixth in receiving yards (735) and seventh in receptions (51). For much of the day he will be opposed by Corey Webster, who has struggled this season partly due to hand and hamstring injuries.
2. BenJarvus Green-Ellis vs. Giants run defense
Tom Coughlin used the word "soft" to describe the middle of his defense for portions of the Giants loss to the Steelers. That was because Isaac Redman, a third-string running back, was consistently plowing through the interior of the Giants defense. He finished with 26 carries for 147 yards, 74 of which came after the first significant contact. Today, the Giants will encounter another physical offensive line and Green-Ellis, a runner with a with more shiftiness and speed than Redman. Statistically, Green-Ellis and the Bengals dont feature a stout ground game; the Bengals rank 26th in run offense with at 95.9 rushing yards per game. Green-Ellis is 21st (487 yards) and is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. But Redman wasnt exactly running wild before last week, either he entered the game with just 127 yards on 50 carries, a 3.93 yards per carry average, in five games.
3. Eli Manning vs. Terence Newman
Terence Newman is looking to make things difficult for a Manning brother in consecutive weeks today. Last week, the Bengals cornerback intercepted Peyton Manning twice in the third quarter the Bengals first interceptions of the season which helped Cincinnati take a brief 20-17 lead before they lost, 31-23. The former Cowboy is plenty familiar with younger brother Eli, too. Newman intercepted Manning four times in his nine seasons in Dallas and is tied for the lead with Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall for interceptions against the Manning brothers. But the last time Newman faced Eli and the Giants, he was swiping at Victor Cruzs legs as Cruz sped away for a 74-yard touchdown in the Giants 31-14 NFC East-clinching win in the regular season finale.
Did you know?
The Giants and Bengals have only met eight times, and the home team has won each meeting. The Bengals have been the home team for five of the games, which means they own a 5-3 record over the Giants. Cincinnati fell in overtime in the last meeting, 26-23, in 2008 at MetLife Stadium.
The number: 34
Eli Manning struggled mightily in the Giants 24-20 loss to the Steelers last week, but his 125 passing yards gave him 30,005 for his career and he became the 34th player in NFL history to reach the 30,000-yard plateau. He is the second Giants quarterback to reach the milestone; Phil Simms threw for a franchise-record 33,642 yards.
4 downs with WR Hakeem Nicks
1. How has the stretch since your broke your foot in May been for you? Has it been frustrating?
You know how this city is, man. All it takes is one game and youre back on top, so I dont ever really ride that wave, man. I dont worry about that stuff. I had that one breakout game against Tampa and it was, "Oh, hes back." I dont ride that wave. Thats for fans to read and talk about.
2. Did you think back in May when you broke your foot and over the summer that you would be back to 100 percent by this point in the season?
Yeah, yeah. Definitely. But I feel like Im as close to 100 percent as Ive been. Im running well. Im running in and out of my routes well. The timing went well today ion practice so we just got to bring it to the game.
3. Kevin Gilbride and Martellus Bennett mentioned that you guys have been practicing the hurry-up more in practice. What can that do? Have you done it a lot?
Its just something to change the pace. You never know when you have to use it in a game, so were just doing it in practice to change the pace a little bit, get a little up-tempo going.
4. Is implementing that a result of the offenses significant struggles lately?
No, weve been doing that. We always did that. Its not something were now doing because people think were struggling.
