Hot on the tails of us talking about the possibility of an “Atomic Blonde” sequel, the good folks over at Universal have just announced that filmmaker David Leitch, known for the previously mentioned ‘Blonde’ and the upcoming “Deadpool 2,” is now on board to direct the as-yet-untitled ‘Fast and Furious’ spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

Not much is known about the ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ spin-off film, but with the addition of Leitch at the helm, we do know the action will be pretty spectacular. Leitch and his collaborator Chad Stahelski are responsible for the incredible action that was seen in the “John Wick” franchise, with both coming from a stunt background. This is all great news for a film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham, two actors who are known for their action films.

Leitch is currently prepping the release of the upcoming “Deadpool 2,” which is about as surefire of a hit as possible. Previous to that, the filmmaker helmed “Atomic Blonde,” but got his directorial start as a second-unit director on blockbusters like “Captain America: Civil War,” “Hitman: Agent 47,” and the two “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films. There’s probably not a better up-and-coming action director on the market, right now.

There has been a lot of drama surrounding this ‘Fast and Furious’ spin-off film. With Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel’s feud becoming more public, it’s unclear whether or not The Rock would make his return to the regular franchise, or just stick with this spin-off series. Universal is also betting big on the film, prioritizing it ahead of the ninth ‘Fast’ film, which caused actor Tyrese Gibson to have a little mini-meltdown on Instagram (it’s worth a Google search, trust me).

The ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ spin-off film is scheduled to be released July 26, 2019.
