At 52 years old, wrestler-turned-Marvel action hero Dave Bautista is in better shape than most 22-year-olds. But he's still a little self-conscious about his appearance. As a recent guest on Ellen, the Guardians of the Galaxy star confessed to the host that his alien alter ego's aversion to shirts is one of the reasons he's exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise after the upcoming third installment. "I'm going to be 54 years old by the time Guardians 3 comes out," he told DeGeneres about why he'll no longer play Drax the Destroyer. "The shirtless thing is getting harder and harder for me."

Bautista was the breakout star of the Guardians' inaugural 2014 adventure as well as the 2017 sequel, both of which were written and directed by James Gunn. And he's long credited Gunn with taking a chance on him when he was still a big-screen novice. “I struggled, I starved for three years, I could barely get a job," he remarked in a 2018 interview. "There were a few people who believed in me along the way, but James was the one who really changed the course of my life.”

Dave Bautista Says Marvel "Dropped the Ball" on Drax's Backstory, But Is Still Looking Forward to Finishing the Character's Journey

“That role changed the trajectory of my life. It's always going to be special to me. Now that I’m four films in...I really wished they would have invested more in Drax, personally. Because I think Drax has more of a story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory which they dropped the ball on. That’s no dig on Marvel. They had their slate, I know what they’re focused on, that’s what they have slated out. But man, I think they really missed the ball on Drax.

“He has such a great backstory. Selfishly, as a performer, that would have given me the opportunity to show different sides of Drax, emotionally. And physically as well. Because, if you notice, Drax, although he looks like a badass, you look at him and he looks terrifying, but Drax gets his ass kicked more than any other Marvel character...The whole “Destroyer” thing they just threw that out the window...people just fell so in love with the comedic side of Drax they tapped into that, then they tapped into it more, then they really dug a hole into it. But we missed a huge boat on that character and I don’t think it’ll ever come back around. But I’m really just looking forward to finishing out this whole journey.”

Dave Bautista Thinks Marvel Should Reboot Drax With a New Actor for His Own Solo Movie

”But you know what I really wish for? I really hope that going forward they will reboot Drax, and I think Drax the Destroyer could be a standalone film. I think it could be something new and something different. Drax has such a great story, and I think time would have to go by and people would have to be willing to accept a new story, a new character, a new Drax the Destroyer.

“But I hope someday that they just recast it and reboot just Drax the Destroyer and focus on that story, because it’s a great story. I mean, there’s so much emotion there, so much rage. I still think there could be moments of humor: it’s just funny that Drax takes everything literally. [laughs] But also I think the films can’t be too dark in tone. They have to have moments of levity, and I think Drax would be that perfect character. I hope they reboot him someday.”
:ehh:

Will always appreciate his candor. I agree with him that they went overboard with the humor and missed an opportunity to flesh out the character. Or never had much planned for the character to begin with. Still, he did his thing with what they gave him and it ended up being career changing.

They could still easily get a Drax story off in animated form via 'What If?' :ehh:

truth be told, if they were going to stay more true to the comics to flesh out Drax, they wouldn't have cast Bautista.

GOTG Drax always came off as wolverine from Logan. His prime years behind him.

I always like when an actor seems to actually really give a shyt about the character they're playing when it's based on something with source material. Him saying he hopes they reboot it and cast someone else says that he legit likes the character, instead of it having been a vehicle to get him paid and status.

Marvel definitely went the wrong direction with Guardians though, as good as James Gunn was with it and how fun he made those movies... the main villain of the phase was Thanos. You have his favorite daughter on the team along with a man sworn to kill him... and the tone was so tied to comedy that couldn't really use either of those points as well as they should have been because... the Guardians were the comic relief team. Whole squad came off looking trash after Infinity War. Quill was directly responsible for Thanos' victory moreso than nearly anyone, Gamora got got, and the rest of the squad got folded. They were effectively the Thor Backup Dancers.

Better he get out now. I could see him getting 'old, grizzled former heavy' roles. I could see him popping up as a Bond villain-style henchman in Kingsmen or something :yeshrug: Good for him making his own way post-wrestling instead of riding the road Rock paved and Cena's now speeding down

Behind You
Drax dies and resurrects a lot in the comics and every time he looks different so they can kill Drax in one movie and bring him back with a different actor with a in-character reason for his new look.

I also understand him being annoyed by how they pigeonholed the character.

In the comics Drax had the relationship with his daughter Moondragon (that eventually ended with her killing him by accident) and there was also the fact that he was bio-engineered specifically to be a living weapon with the primary mission to kill Thanos.
