While Netflix is currently bursting at the seams with acclaimed original content, one of its biggest successes to date remains Marvel’s Daredevil, the first series to result from the streaming giant’s partnership with Marvel and its parent company Disney. Introducing a harder, more adult-oriented edge to the Marvel Studios landscape, Daredevilmanaged its 13-episode first season wisely, using the expanded – compared to a Marvel film – length to allow viewers to really get inside the heads of characters like Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk to see what makes them tick.
Daredevil season 2 premiered earlier this year, and while it wasn’t as universally praised as season 1, the second round of Matt Murdock’s fight was still mostly well-received. Oddly enough though, despite its popularity, neither season of Daredevil has made its way to home video, on either DVD or Blu-ray. While one could argue that Daredevil’s native and intended viewing format is streaming, other Netflix original series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black see each of their seasons hit physical disc each year like clockwork.
Thankfully, that’s all about to change, as Disney has announced an impending Blu-ray release for Daredevilseason 1. Arriving next month, Daredevil: The Complete First Seasonwill contain… well, the complete first season of Daredevil. No one can accuse the box of false advertising. Unfortunately, Disney has yet to clarify which special features – if any – will be included. There is some precedent to not expect much in that department, as the Cards and Orange Blu-rays contain little to no extra features per season.
As nice as it is that fans are finally getting the opportunity to add Daredevilseason 1 to their home video collections, one wonders if – or perhaps when – Daredevil season 2 will get a similar Blu-ray release. Nearly two years after airing is quite late for a TV season to first be hitting disc, and it’ll be interesting to see if Disney opts to continue this delayed release cycle with season 2.
On the same line of thinking, with Daredevil season 1 marking the first instance of a Netflix/Marvel show arriving on on disc, one also wonders when fans might expect similar releases of Jessica Jones or Luke Cage season 1. It would be logical to surmise that if one Defenders-verse show is coming to Blu-ray, the rest will probably follow. Then again, Disney might simply be testing the waters to see how Daredevil sells, and will use those figures to determine whether or not Jessica and Luke should also make the jump to home video.
