Too many pump fakes. Literally every big name over the last few years has been rumored to go to the Celtics. But he decided to sit on them draft picks.

Contract extensions mean nothing with a new GM and regime in charge. They could still easily fire him at anytime and he'd get a new job within 5 minutes. That would mean that they don't have to pay him the full amount and just cover the difference between his old contract and new one. We also don't know the terms of that extension and if it includes any team options that benefit the Celtics.
Tatum's contract kicks in next year and the clock starts ticking, so the time for experimenting and wasting time is over.
