DMX’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” has long been the song that accompanied Anderson Silva’s walk to the UFC octagon.

As the UFC legend prepared to face Nick Diaz in the main event of this Saturday’s UFC 183, he wanted to change his tune – literally. But UFC President Dana White shot down that idea.

“Ask Dana White,” Silva said. “Whenever I talk about changing my song, he says no. (Brazilian rapper) Pregador Luo was working with Usher, who is my personal friend, on a new tune. But it seems like Dana does not want to change the music, so we won’t be able to do it.”

Silva (33-6 MMA, 16-2 UFC) is returning to the cage for the first time since his horrific December 2013 leg break in a rematch with Chris Weidman. The desire to change his walkout song likely goes hand-in-hand with his outlook on the fight.

As he told Globo, this is a fresh start for the man considered by many to be the best mixed martial artist ever.

“It’s as if it’s my first time stepping in there, you know? Everything is very new,” Silva said. “I’m coming back … no, no, it’s (like) my first fight in the UFC! Damn! Man, I have to win! I’m feeling like a child with a brand-new toy.”

i heard that he apparently gets the final word on everybody's walkout songs. that's totally fukked. these guys should be able to come out to whatever music they want.

especially when they about to go fight, shyt is just ridiculous, what the fukk is the purpose of him controlling their music, other than being a control freak

I think they have to pay for clearance to use the songs... so it is actually a big deal.
Even if Usher lets him use the song for free, they have to clear it for use on video games and promo material... whereas they might already have a usage rights contract in place for DMX's "No Sunshine"
so there is at least a legal angle to it.

Even if they secure the new rights, they have to keep the old rights as well to broadcast old shows on fight pass and tv. So they could end up paying over and over if they have to liscence a bunch of songs, because top artists are unlikely to simply liscence a song indefinately for any use without charging alot.

Thats why WWE commisions and writes and records alot of their themes in-house now.

Music liscencing is a whole big thing. So if you have a roster of hundreds of talent each with a song, it becomes a headache I imagine. So I don't think its Dana being an a$$hole moreso than usual. Just business probably. Plus branding...

They never use walkout songs on DVD's or when they rebroadcast fights, it's always some generic shyt.

Oh. That makes sense.
I don't have any UFC dvds.
I used to buy the PPVs... then they fired Chandella. :manny: Now I just stream the shyt free.

Yeah, music liscencing is a big chunk of money. Alot of times even if they need a song they will pay for a cover and not the original artist. Looks like they said F that and just skipped it altogether.

None of that applies to one time live usage. It's the same deal as boxing. Music in the venue is whatever. You'd pay the same amount an arena would to use someones song during timeouts of a basketball game i.e. not much.

Notice, if you watch the official HBO or Shotime rebroadcast or youtube postings of boxing fights, they cut the entrances. UFC dubs generic music over it.

This is just Dana, again, trying to be Vince McMahon.

Yeah, I was using the price model of them needing the rights to the music.
I just learned a moment ago that they cut the intros.

I always watch live. I haven't seen the dvds or rebroadcasts.

Maybe Dana thought an Usher song was too soft or something??

Now that I think about it... we'll most likely get an answer.
Ariel or somebody will ask him about it and he'll explain it. He usually talks about most stuff.
