UFC President Dana White today told Boston’s “Metro South Morning Show” that Belfort is the people’s choice to face the winner of Saturday’s UFC 168 main event.
“On Saturday night, if Chris Weidman wins or Anderson Silva wins, the next massive, huge fight that everyone wants to see is Vitor Belfort,” White said. “That’s what everybody wants to see.”
And since White has often admitted his job as a promoter is to “put on the fights fans want to see,” that would seem to make Belfort the de facto No. 1 contender.
It would be hard to argue that Belfort doesn’t deserve a shot at the belt. After all, in the past 12 months he’s scored three “Knockout of the Night” bonuses for his destructions of top contenders Dan Henderson, Luke Rockhold and Michael Bisping.
The most recent win came in November, when Belfort moved up to light heavyweight and became the first man to ever knockout MMA legend and former dual-division PRIDE champ Henderson. Afterward, White almost declared Belfort as the rightful No. 1 contender but stopped himself just short.
“Vitor Belfort’s next,” White said at first. “Or – I don’t know.
“You never know what happens here.… Anything could happen, but there’s nothing but big fights for Vitor.”
