I remember Esham out of Detroit calling out the Gravediggaz for stepping into the lane that he had created with horrorcore. I listened to their radio singles at the time, and any 5% doctrine flew over my head like when other rappers used it.
Seemed gimmicky, and against what groups like Wu and Stetsa stood for.

That Stetsa Free South Africa song and video is what really started the conscious/Afrocentric wave of hip hop in that era.
