Richard Gere hopes to bring goats to his New Canaan farm.

First it was Kevin Bacon, and now it's Richard Gere making goat news in Connecticut.
Gere, known for films like “Pretty Woman” and “An Officer and a Gentleman,” purchased Paul Simon’s former New Canaan property and hopes to turn it into a farm. Gere and his wife Alejandra Silva want to use 27 of the 32-acre property for farming.

During a recent Planning and Zoning meeting the Gere's lawyer David Rucci said the couple are looking to run a low-impact farm that grows mushrooms and provides honey, with the potential of adding goats and chickens in the future.
"We would like to get the seven goats that are family members (here) right away with no (intention) of expanding beyond them as a business but as our own pets," Gere told the commission.

Gere isn’t the first movie star to share his love of goats in Connecticut. Fellow Hollywood star Kevin Bacon and his wife actress Kyra Sedgwick have a farm in Sharon where they keep goats. Bacon’s TikToks featuring him singing to the goats went viral last year and in 2021 the couple purchased two goats from Aussakita Acres Farm in Manchester.
But the New Canaan Planning and Zoning Commission was hesitant about the Gere’s potential goats and the effects of manure.
"I have received phone calls from four or five neighbors (who were) very concerned ... if this was going to be some sort of big commercial operation, and it's really not," Rucci said. "The owners … they both have grown up on farms, they're very interested in farms and teaching their kids about farms … so this is really important to them."

"We (own) seven goats right now and frankly we don't have a dumpster (for the manure), we don't have anything like that," Gere told the commission. "We have a … compost area at our current property in North Salem … (the manure) goes right into the ground and deteriorates very quickly."
