Why have so many coronavirus patients died in Italy?

This seems to have gotten ignored which is because it's very interesting.

In addition to having a disproportionately old population....apparently any deaths in hospitals where there are COVID-19 deaths....are lumped in with the COVID-19 deaths.

But Prof Ricciardi added that Italy’s death rate may also appear high because of how doctors record fatalities.

“The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus.

We’re about halfway to Italy’s case count, but still far off in total death count. Maybe Italy really catching the worse of it

You can't really compare the raw numbers. American cases are spread out over a much greater area and population. 50 states can easily absorb the current numbers. Italy's numbers were all in one region of their much smaller country. Hospitals were just overloaded.

For Americans to feel that type of impact you need Italy numbers in each state or city. That's when you have a real problem

Just read it again and apparently....let's say you have COVID-19. Let's say it doesn't kill you, something else does. They count it as a COVID-19 death.
