Could y'all put me on to what "cloud" means with respect to musical style?

What up, brehs. Been a minute. I moved to LA and only have my iPad here so no new beats since late April. Getting my hustle on, though, and trying to make things happen. So far, so good.

Anyways, I saw the other thread where all producers were submitting their contact info and whatnot – great idea, by the way – and I saw a couple of people mention that their style is "cloud." Could one of you all explain to me what that is exactly?

i think it points to stuff that's kind of spacey and ethereal, dripping in reverb and delays, vintage analog pad type sounds, lots of processed ambient and vocal samples...think clams casino instrumentals.

shyt is mostly sample choice and effects tbh. lots of high hats, either really high pitched or low pitched slowed down samples.

pretty much anythign can work if you add enough bullshyt on it to make it sound dreamy. The dreamier the starting sample is the easier tho lol. try imogen heap, hammock, beach house...shyts simple b.

tbh naw I wouldn't say so. personally I think cloud rap is just shoegaze in hip hop form so there has to be some type of wall of sound or density. If you added some reverb to the melody or perhaps a very warped pad you might have what you are looking for. Its always easiest just to find a sample already tailored to this stuff than do it from scratch tho

yeah i know how to process the shyt but i was wondering what kind of stuff you have in your arsenal cuz like you said, it's a lot easier (and more sensible than trying to force shyt out of a sample) to work with good source material. i know imogen heap's a staple of the genre, i've know of beach house...never heard of hammock though. i just asked because i assume you know the whole shoegaze/chillwave/etc genre more than i do.

usually when I'm looking for samples to make that type of music I look for dream pop or ambient shyt preferably with vocals, and then I chop a part I like, throw some effects on it...usually see how it sounds reversed and add drums.

yea cloud just means ambient, slow, downtempo, pad heavy, usually lots of reverb/delay. Clams casino is seen as the most prominent "cloud hip hop" producer
