Remember City High?

Positive urban music with a real message without having to disguise it in subtlety.

They just out-right challenged negative ideas and stereotypes...even incorporated "The Next Episode" into the "What Would You Do?" song. Had a song praising the complexion of black women getting bumped out here.

Their album actually went gold (I didn't know), but I DO remember reading that the group had a LOT of drama. I think the Claudette Ortiz chick was dating one of the singer guys and ended up marrying the other one. One of them ended up on "Intervention" or something. :manny:

Anyway, do you think music like this get spins and thrive in today's music scene?

....and as not to commit any pic vios :scheme: :

They were basically The Fugees Light to me. Still pretty talented group, yea they all knew each other in high school and the singer chick had been dating one of the group members ( the one that wasn't in Sister Act 2) and once they became famous he became an alcoholic and basically fukked up the group. The Claudette chick then married the other group member from Sister Act and it was a wrap for that group....

The music of today in the mainstream is sooooooo watered down that I don't even know if a group like City High would thrive, and its not even like they were a super conscious group to begin with. Claudette was attractive enough and could sing and the other two guys were decent singers and excellent writers so it wouldn't be an issue of talent or appeal moreso as marketing. They would've had to push Claudette as more of a sex symbol and drop some generic club song with Lil Wayne auto tuning and screaming "YUNG MOLA BABBBYYYYYY!!!" To catch a buzz which is unfortunate...

I only knew Claudette Ortiz because of that Tony Yayo punchline :russ:

but to answer your question, probably not. nikkas would be quick to categorize this with some Kirk Franklin/Mary Mary type shyt in 2013

Claudette Ortiz could still get it though
