ThaBoxingVoice.com reported last week that Miguel Cotto would indeed be signing with Roc Nation Sports and announcing it on ESPN’s show First Take. Now while many people feel that Top Rank Inc., Cotto’s promoter throughout his career did a great job in making him one of boxing’s biggest stars, Cotto chose not to have a relationship with them.

Roc Nation first signed Andre Ward then tried to buyout Gary Shaw Promotions. However, the deal did not go as plan and the two parties split. With these moves, Roc Nation has proven that they are willing to spend money to gain the best fights and best fighters.

They began their foray into boxing bidding 1.4 million dollars for a fight between Peter Quillin and Matt Korobov. Many people though they overbid for such a fight. The fight never came through, but that didn’t stop Roc Nation Sports to offering Deontay Wilder and Keith Thurman multi-million dollar deals to try and sign them to their promotional entity. Neither budged.

So when the Miguel Cotto broke the news, many people wondered why. Well Cotto had about 50 million reasons why.

Cotto confirmed to ESPN Deportes that his deal with Roc Nation Sports is a three-fight deal with a contract worth 50 million dollars. A source close to the situation also told ThaBoxingVoice.com that Cotto’s signing bonus was 5 million dollars.

In the ESPN Deportes report, Cotto confirms with cross-promotion, he could earn near 100 million dollars as well. With that contract, Miguel will earn between 15-17 million dollars per fight. No one outside of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are seeing close to those figures in the United States. Outside of the United States, only the Heavyweight champion of the world, Wladimir Klitschko even comes close to those numbers.

It was all about the money and in sports it’s usually like that. So readers, can we really fault Miguel Cotto for this move?

Cotto is one of my favorite fighters but Cotto is one loss away. Terrible deal.

This is definitely a desperation move by RNS after losing so many fighters.
I'm still surprised Thurman did not sign though. But :manny:

But who is Cotto going to fight to justify that payout for RocNation?
Canelo is a possibility but that is about it as far as big names.
He aint getting Floyd again considering the beef between Haymon and Jay Z; Cotto just burned all his bridges with Top Rank which rules out Pacquiao; Khan is another Haymon fighter; Tim Bradley is Top Rank; i seriously doubt Cotto even is interested in GGG.

Roc Nation didn't think this through. Cotto isn't selling out MSG or Barclays fighting bums.

RNS better stack up their cards if they really want be a major player in this boxing promotion realm. Maybe have Ward's next fight on the same card on with Cotto.
