A deal is apparently very close for a fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) and Argentina's Jorge Sebastian Heiland (25-4-2, 13KOs), who is rated number one under the WBC and coming off a November knockout victory over Matthew Macklin. The deal is easy to make because both fighters are advised by Gaby Penagaricano. Cotto's return is targeted for June 6th in New York City.

El Vocero reports that in order for HBO to pay a license fee for Cotto-Heiland, there has to be a preliminary agreement in place for Cotto to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the fall. Canelo is back on May 9th against James Kirkland. There were negotiations to face Cotto earlier this year but they couldn't reach an agreement on the financial terms.

A source told El Vocero - "It's a very doable fight because Gaby Peñagarícano is the advisor to Heiland. It's a fight that is almost certain. HBO is not interested in the fight because they view more like the fight Cotto had with Delvin Rodriguez. But they are willing to accept it if their conditions are met - that a fight with Canelo is signed. So they are going to try [to make that fight]."

Cotto must really be financially secure to be able to burn bridges like he has since winning that belt

Him and TR didn't part ways the greatest of ways, but HBO ain't turning down a potential Cotto vs Canelo fight. Whatever issues he has with TR I don't think are going to affect him fighting big names on HBO (which really might just be 1 or 2 left).
