Miguel Cotto tossed water on the idea that he needs to face Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin to cement his legacy as an all-time great.
Talking at a press conference for his fight on Saturday against Daniel Geale at a catch-weight of 157 pounds at Barclays Center, Cotto asked the reporters in attendance to basically put his resume up against those of Alvarez and Golovkin before making that statement.
“Alvarez had his moment to shine against Mayweather,” Cotto said before Tuesday’s final press conference. “Everybody knows what happened there. Golovkin is a guy who never faced in my opinion a Class A opponent and people still asking for those kinds of fights. Miguel Cotto has been here for 14 years, facing everybody and it’s the time for Daniel Geale. After Saturday, we’ll see what happens next in my career.”
Cotto landed a thudding shot at the premise that Golovkin hasn’t faced particularly dangerous opposition in his career so far.
“You can ask this question yourself,” Cotto said. “Just go to Boxrec and compare the names (between me and him) and you will see.”
Was he insulted by fans demanding that he face those boxers?
“No, no, no, it’s normal that fans want the best one facing the best one,” Cotto said. “But every fight has it’s time. It happened with Mayweather and Manny, where people spent five years until this fight happened and people have to wait (before I face Golovkin).”
Cotto is expected to face Alvarez in the fall in a super fight on HBO PPV if he wins on Saturday.
