The MGM Grand in Las Vegas and the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City are aggressively pursing the hosting rights to the highly anticipated fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez of Mexico. Both venues have submitted solid economic proposals to secure the fight, which is being targeted for a date in November on HBO Pay-Per-View.

On Thursday, Michael Yomark, president of Roc Nations Sports (who have Cotto), had a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya (who has Canelo) in Los Angeles to discuss the date and the venue.

"There was a meeting between the two sides on Thursday," confirmed Gabriel Peñagarícano, legal adviser Cotto, to El Vocero. "It was Michael Yomark, for the side of Roc Nation and Oscar de la Hoya, for Golden Boy. I was not present, but there are many things ahead.

"I think things have not taken a new direction. New York has always been in place as one of the options next to Las Vegas. We have been negotiating with both places from the beginning and both places have been equally alive and with many possibilities."

"Both venues - the MGM Grand and Madison Square Garden- are very aggressive. There is a strong possibility the [fight will] happen in New York or Las Vegas. They are aggressive and we are close to reaching a decision. The Thomas & Mack Center has not been excluded yet. There is a lot of interest from everyone."

Why does NYC need the extra foot traffic? In Vegas it's a party city and all of that extra foot traffic amounts to gambling

Vegas has the trump card, no pun intended. Promoters go around selling primo seats to each of the big Hotels on the strip for millions a piece. That jacks up the profit at the gate in a way you can't in NY or any other place. Not to mention promoters like Haymon making big time side deals with the MGM to take profits off of hotel bookings for fight weekend. Haymon usually does that without cutting his boxers in.

Then, if you factor in the type of cross-booking Roc Nation can do in Vegas for fight weekend across the strip, Vegas is the favorite. Imagine all of the Roc Nation artists/athletes/DJs descending upon Vegas and throwing a bunch of parties at different venues throughout the weekend. They'll ALL eat off of the big fight and their pull. They can have concerts, pool parties, meet & greets, etc. And the official afterparty will net them another huge check.

Unless MSG or Barclays overwhelms them with the upfront $, Vegas is the spot.

Have you heard of people called Puerto Ricans? They come from an island called Puerto Rico.

They might fill the arena out (just like any other event as MSG that day) . . but in Vegas the people coming are going to spend money all over
