The cop sitting down thought he had the jump on the robber so he fired on him at close range but the robber also fired back hitting and killing the police officer. The robber was hit but survived.
Some people were saying it looked like the robber was backing up away from them and if the police officer wouldn't have shot first he would probably still be alive and the officer should have waited a little bit because he put everybody sitting at that table life in danger by shooting at the robber and not thinking that the the robber might shoot back. The bullet that killed the police officer could have easily hit his wife who was sitting right next to him.
The deceased police officer has been identified as Dale Mayers.
Just after 10 p.m. Mayers was dining with his wife and a friend - who is also a licensed firearms holder - at Unique Bar along the Montrose Main Road in Chaguanas, when they were confronted by a lone gunman.
The man, dressed in all black, walked up and announced a hold-up. However, as he looked away, Mayers pulled out his licensed firearm and shot at the suspect. The suspect returned fire before turning and fleeing the scene.
Mayers was shot in the chest with the bullet exiting his left arm. He died while undergoing treatment at about 11:06 p.m. police sources said.
