I thought this deserves it's own thread since you have liberals and conservatives on this site blaming obama for protecting mosanto when such a measure doesn't even exist.

What this particular measure does is allow the Secretary of Agriculture to grant a temporary deregulation status for a crop in the event that the crop is under litigation against the USDA’s approval of deregulation status, for the time period that the case is working through the courts. This means that attempts to damage a competitor, by filing suit against their crop, will not happen. Anybody can file a lawsuit in the United States. It would be incredibly easy for a competing firm to file a lawsuit against such a status for a crop grown by their competition, to effectively freeze that competition out of the market for the years needed for a case to work its way through the courts. This measure simply ensures that will not happen.

In Addition,

Not only that, but this bill passed both houses of Congress with a filibuster proof majority. Even if it was as bad as some people are claiming the President couldn’t have vetoed it if he wanted to.

This whole controversy was created by conservatives to get liberals mad at obama, and you all fell right for it. :snoop:

So much for fact checking the whole thing sounded absurd from the start.

People just love to react. Never understood how something you never heard of until literally 2 minutes ago can make some folks so upset.

For the record I have no idea if what you posted is accurate. I just know that I don't know enough to react yet...

Monsanto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) is a publicly traded American multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation headquartered in Creve Coeur, Missouri.[3][4] It is a leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed

Monsanto's development and marketing of genetically engineered seed and bovine growth hormone, as well as its aggressive litigation, political lobbying practices, seed commercialization practices and "strong-arming" of the seed industry[4] have made the company controversial around the world and a primary target of the alter-globalization movement and environmental activists.

A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. (wiki)

The Monsanto Company is a U.S.-based multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation. It is the world’s leading producer of the herbicide glyphosate, marketed as “Roundup”. Monsanto is also the leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed; it sells 90% of the US’s GE seeds.

Ever since I read about it the other I've kept thinking about it. As in how that could be possible to basically freeze of the judicial branch, relieved to know I was just ill-informed

We'll see if this becomes an 8 pg thread like the one before it. All the anti-Obama heads are suspiciously quiet.

There is no such thing as a monsanto protection act, it is being labeled as such by sensationalizers. As I also said in my initial post, it went through the house and senate through a veto proof majority so he can't veto it even if he did want to. The information is all in the link in my original post.

Um yeah, I learned that it wasn't actually named the Monsanto Protection Act yesterday. It's a headline grabbing moniker. So what? The actual bill does exist. And was this particular measure filibuster proof of was it the spending bill it was riding on filibuster/veto proof?

This was a rider put into the bill allegedly before Mikulski even became the chair. The overall spending bill was veto proof, but it's only a stop gap measure meant to last for 6 month until a more long-term solution will be reached. In other words, people are going nuts over 6 months in which courts won't be able to grant injunctions if they think shyt is dangerous. The Secretary of Agriculture could probably still pull the plug (I'd have to look at the administrative structure). So unless you think that within the next 6 months we're about to be hit with the most toxic induced food products ever, it's an issue gaining much more importance it deserves and probably taking attention from more pertinent shyt that Monsanto does. As far as I can see, again no one has linked me directly to the specific language and I asked a poster to do so, the number of it being floated makes it seem like it may have been tacked onto the military spending portion of the bill. Which is sneaky, but clever.
