Conceptually, "Remember the Time" should be the GOAT music video. Yet it isnt cause of John Singelon's inexperience imo.

Conceptually, Remember the Time is Michael Jackson's greatest video.

When you aint watched MJ Videos in a long time and start with that one it seems like the GOAT. I happen to stumble upon the documentary, and you hear Singleton talking about how he never worked on something as big as that before.

Then when you watch Bad and Thriller right afterwards it seems like something is missing with that video. :patrice:

And its cause John Singleton's inexperience. Say what you will, but Bad and Thriller had more experienced great directors. You can just see the visual flair of Martin Scorsese and John Landis.
I mean the directing in Bad is just on another level :whoo:

However, Mike was doing John a solid by giving him that job just off the strength of Boyz N The Hood. I also think the fact Spike Lee had already worked with Prince probably had him resistant. Still I cant help but wonder if Spike Lee directed that video just how visually captivating it could have been.

However, once MJ and Spike got together for, They Dont Care About Us :banderas:

R.I.P to Singelton though. Not slight to his overall talent as a director.

Bad is corny af and not memorable in the slightest compared to Remember The Time. Even sonically that B-side ass track doesn’t even touch RTT

You wrote a lot but didn't actually offer an explanation beyond "Singleton inexperienced" and "Scorsese experienced". I'm a layman though. So if someone who works in cinema can explain, it would be helpful. Otherwise, I sat and watched the entire video again and thought it was great. Choreography is on point. Has that iconic dance sequence in the last few minutes of the video.

Michael Jackson's presence elevated everything he touched. Songs, features, music videos.
When he teamed up with other creative geniuses , you got magic.

I think Remember the Time was a great video Thought so then, still think so.
Its still a great video. However, its more because of the cast and whose in it. The directing just seems a bit generic compared to other videos.

I mean in technical terms if feels very stilted. Like it just made sure it covered the shots it needed for the day.

You look at the other great MJ vids are there is a noticeable difference in cinematography, blocking, scene transitions, editing etc.

The Spike Lee vid is purely a music video. However, it looks cinematic and epic in a way.

RTT looks very TVish. Again not that isnt it great, but you could feel like you're watching movies with other ones.

I never was the biggest fan of Bad. Liked it, but the direction is undeniable.

I dont want to shyt on John cause breh was a great director.

However, its like the Menace II Society vs Boyz N the Hood debates.

Boyz was the better story and maybe movie. However, Menace had better cinematography, score, editing, etc. The Hughes Bros were just better on a technical level.
I don't know about his best video, but this is def his worst:

Gaht damn. Can tell this was made by the guy who directed Double Dragon. :mjlol:

subpar by his standards. And a flex of how many people in Hollywood he could call for some random shyt and they would trip over themselves to say yes. This thing didn’t need a video at all. It’s like all the budget went to Leave Me Alone, a true classic

Remember the Time video had solid execution but another director would have taken it the extra step. Superior choreography and elite music drive this thing so the video plays a background role. But the whole package stands the test of time and is literally the apex of New Jack Swing. Teddy deserved a record label executive position for his work — and MJ’s people should’ve locked him into a deal.
