Comic-Con: Whedon Talks The Avengers: Age of Ultron and More

Summer 2015 is shaping up to be one almighty geek fest, with Man of Steel 2(featuring Batman) joining Star Wars: Episode VII and, of course, The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And, with all the excitement at Comic-Con, surrounding Batman’s shock inclusion in the next Superman instalment, Marvel supremo Joss Whedon also announced the title for his blockbuster sequel.

Whedon unveiled the name, The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, along with an official logo and teaser video.

The video clip showed Ultron, the Avengers’ new antagonist, complete with frightening red eyes, which shot out laser beams which revealed the logo. While Warner Bros. were not exactly forthcoming about information relating to their Superman-Batman film (aside from everyone from Man of Steel returning and we assume a new Batman), Whedon was unexpectedly vocal about the villian’s involvement.

He said (Marvel.com via Comic Book Movie): “Well, because there was a book called ‘Age of Ultron’ quite recently, a lot of people have assumed that is what we’re doing, but that is not the case. We’re doing our own version of the origin story for Ultron.

“In the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he will be in the mix. He’s not. We’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside.”

So, to confirm, Hank Pym aka Ant-Man, who created Ultron in the comics, will not feature in the next Avengers film. A little odd, since Ant-Man opens about three months after The Avengers 2.

However, Whedon did intimate that a new origins story has been created, which will involve the superhero collective.

He said: “We’re crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It’s a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house.

“There’s a science fiction theme that wasn’t there in the other one. Ultron is definitely something that evolves, so we’re going to get together a couple of different iterations. Nothing can be translated exactly as it was from the comics; particularly Ultron.”

Interestingly, the director also mentioned that the sequel will be more expansive than the original, which grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide last summer.

He said: “It’s very much a global Avengers film. A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world.

“Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie so now it’s nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys.”

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is scheduled for release in May 2015.

How do you keep a secret like Ultron? Don't tell anyone.

Or only those that truly need to know. That's how Marvel Studios and director Joss Whedon were able to roll into San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday night armed with the still-secret title of their "Avengers" sequel and break the news to a rapid crowd in Hall H. And that's how, minutes later, MTV News was able to reveal the name — "Avengers: Age of Ultron" — to Chris Evans himself.

Not even Captain America knew. That's how you keep a massive piece of Hollywood news secret.

"Who's Ultron?" Evans asked once we revealed the title, turning to costarScarlett Johansson and asking again, "Who's Ultron?"

Johansson was equally in the dark, wondering aloud if she'd still be stepping into the skintight suit of Black Widow. "They keep us in a container," she cracked. "Who do I play?"

The two actors have got some time to get up to speed. "Age of Ultron" doesn't hit theaters until 2015. For now, they're concentrating on "Captain America: The Winter Solider," their superhero sequel coming out next year — a movie that Evans suggests will be much more character-driven than past Marvel flicks.

"In the early 'Iron Man' movies, the Cap movie, even 'The Avengers,' you didn't really get a lot of time with the characters individually. And I think both characters — Black Widow and Capt — have some depth to them," he explained. "They both have trust issues. They both, as Scarlett said, have been working for other people for a really long time."

Evans added, "Given their current situation — you can't give too much away — they're both forced to look at what's motivated their actions for the past x-amount of years. In a weird way, because they come from a very different approach to morals and values, they've found a common ground and they each teach each other something about who they are."

Not sure how I feel about the origin of Ultron not including Hank/Antman. At least give the man a small cameo in the development process or something.
