There are conventions year round. I was at a black comic convention last month. The big two happen once a year.

won son of the year taking my dad to one these earlier this year. I went to the steelcity con. They do it like 3 times a year out in pittsburg
has just as many celebrity as the main comicon, but not as many activities like rides and holograms displays and stuff.
Dad clearly would fit with coli posters though, really liked the cosplayers and (he was super excited to meet Marisa Tomei.)

but hey, he had a good time and talks about it constantly ever since.
i got Mike tyson to sign some boxing gloves and bought a bunch of comics for my brother.
