ust like she did during the first half of the school year, first-grader Coy Mathis wants to use the girls' restroom at her Colorado elementary school. But school officials won't let her.
The reason? Coy is transgendered, born with male sex organs but a child who identifies herself as female.
She dressed as a girl for most of last year. And her passport and state-issued identification recognize her as female.
In December, the Fountain-Fort Carson School District informed Coy's parents that Coy would be barred from using the girls' restrooms at Eagleside Elementary in Fountain after winter break.
Transgender kids: Painful quest to be who they are
She could instead use the boys' bathroom, gender-neutral faculty bathrooms or the nurse's bathroom, the district said.

In making the decision, the district "took into account not only Coy but other students in the building, their parents, and the future impact a boy with male genitals using a girls' bathroom would have as Coy grew older," attorney W. Kelly Dude said.
"However, I'm certain you can appreciate that as Coy grows older and his male genitals develop along with the rest of his body, at least some parents and students are likely to become uncomfortable with his continued use of the girls' restroom."
Transgender job seekers face uphill battle
Coy's parents see it differently.
By forcing Coy to use a different bathroom than all the other girls, the school is "targeting her for stigma, bullying and harassment," said Michael Silverman, one of Coy's lawyers and the executive director of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund.
"Coy's school has the opportunity to turn this around and teach Coy's classmates a valuable lesson about friendship, respect and basic fairness."
On Wednesday, Coy's parents will announce that they will file a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division.
Being transgender no longer a mental 'disorder' in diagnostic manual
An unstudied group
Transgender children experience a disconnect between their sex, which is anatomy, and their gender, which includes behaviors, roles and activities.
For the general public, transgender identity is a somewhat new concept, though many might recall Chaz Bono, who was born female to entertainers Sonny and Cher and appeared on last year's "Dancing with the Stars," in part, he said, to destigmatize being transgender.
In his 40s, Bono underwent a transition to become a man. He wrote in his book "Transition" that even in his childhood, he had been "aware of a part of me that did not fit."
Comprehensive data and studies about transgender children are rare. The rates of people who are transgender vary from 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 1,000, depending on various international studies.
Some children as young as 3 show early signs of gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder, mental health experts who work with transgender children say.
These children are not intersex -- they do not have a physical disorder or malformation of their sexual organs. The gender issue exists in the brain, though whether it's psychological or physiological is debated by experts.
Many transgender children report feeling discomfort with their gender as early as they can remember.
Gender identity often gets confused with sexual orientation. The difference is that "gender identity is who you are and sexual orientation is who you want to have sex with," said Dr. Johanna Olson, a professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Southern California who treats transgender children.
When talking about young children around age 3, they're probably not interested in sexual orientation, she said. But experts say some children look like they will be transgender in early childhood, and turn out to be gay, lesbian or bisexual.
Gender nonconformity is not a disorder, group says
Differences in schools
School policies toward transgender students vary across the U.S.
In New York, for example, the law says students can't be discriminated against on the basis of their gender identity.
In Maine, on the other hand, a court ruled in November that a school district did not violate a transgender student's rights when she was told she couldn't use the girl's restroom.
Dude, the attorney, has said there are no Colorado cases that require public schools to permit transgender students to use restrooms of the gender with which they identify.
Girl Scouts accept transgender kid, provoking cookie boycott
He added that the Fountain-Fort Carson School District adheres to the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act because "Coy attends class as all other students, is permitted to wear girls' clothes, and is referred to as the parents have requested."
She also has easy access to bathrooms other than the girls' restroom, Dude said.
Coy's case will be the first to challenge such a restriction under the state's anti-discrimination act, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund said.
For now, the first-grader is being home-schooled.

I am very skeptical of the idea of a "transgender 1st grader"

As anyone with an inkling of common sense should be.

I know that children begin to identify with social beliefs about gender around 3-5 years old, but they also believe that they can fly and be actual dinosaurs around that age too.

I have no problem with an older person capable of making a decision like this doing so, but this is a fukking child.

Where do we begin this is so derogatory to humanity, friends. :snoop:

Transgendered 1st graders. Lets stop and reflect on that for a moment. A transgendered, first grader. This means when this boy was sashaying around the house acting like a character seen on television the parents said *o look hes just expressing himself* instead of disciplining that young man saying *no, stop, dont do that* Its so demonic.

When you allow your child to express his or herself in whatever way they see fit in those early impressionable years, you leave your child to be heavily influenced by The Devil. By default we are born into a demonic realm where demonic culture and demons run things to our detriment. Its your duty as a parent to tell your child *hey, no, stop that there thats not right * when they do things that are wrong. There is nothing right in a 1st grade boy thinking he is a girl. These parents have allowed a demonic spirit to possess their son and have just sat by and encouraged their sons downward spiral into his ultimate depression.

They send child services to the houses of individuals for the pettiest of reasons. Shouldnt child services be sent to the home of this parent who im assuming is a single mother.

If my child saw animal planet and took a liking to ducks and began to quack like a duck everywhere can i now tell the world that my son is a duck because thats how he identifies himself? No, i would be looked at as insane and child services would probably be sent to my home if i really took it seriously. Parenting in the most crucial development years, is a dictatorship. You only see this filth happening in the most undisciplined communities. This child is being allowed to be a disgrace and abomination by his parent.

Oddly, for some strange sick and satanic reason, the psychology community is cosigning this garbage and allowing something that is clearly insane to be cosigned as normal. Sadly a lot of it has to do with the fact that many people in the field of psychology are transgendered/homosexual and use this demonic mumbo jumbo to rationalize their insanity and make champions out of demons, having reached heights of influence in the field of psychology.

It doesnt help that leaders themselves who pretend to be heterosexual to obtain votes use their power to get laws passed to favor who they really are behind closed doors which is a man who has been driven insane by demons which have caused him to dress up like a woman.

Even the article itself is filth. The article actually identifies this boy as HER. He is not a girl. Being a girl, a woman means there is a physiological difference between yourself and a man. Being a woman is not a state of mind and anyone who says it is, is demonic and clearly, insane. Sad this boy has been psychologically abused, undisciplined and ultimately brainwashed by a parent whos neglected his development by allowing him to be entranced by demonic entities. Watch out for your kids yall. The demons are showing their hand and making the insane, the new sane.

Its so demonic, friends.

This is bulshyt. When people talk about "the gay agenda" this is the type of shyt they are referring to. You wanna be gay fine. You wanna teach your son that he should be a girl fine. But I don't have to accept my daughter sharing a bathroom with a boy, or missing a spot on the softball team cause some little boy decided he wanted to be a girl.

These parents are dispicable, first off a six year old can't be anything unless his parents coach him into it. Secondly if they are teaching their son to be a girl, they should be teaching him that he will be an outcast in society and he will have to make some concessions in order to fit in. They shouldn't be teaching him that everybody will bend to his whim and change their own thoughts and opinions.

I think I'd need more evidence to take a stand on this one way or another. In general, I'm opposed to forcibly imposing identities on young children in these stages of development, but on the other hand, there's so little evidence on this topic that there's probably a lot I'm not taking into account. Furthermore, there's also the problem of people approaching identity in different ways. Just as with sexual orientations, say homosexuality, you'll have people who live half their lives in confusion before realizing they're gay, and people who'll know the moment they're conscious of sex. Gender identity is probably the same way, requiring a case-by-case basis for judgment. It may be possible that hormonally, or neurologically, this kid has been wired like a girl since birth, in which case, the perception of gender identity might actually be valid to that extent, though that doesn't settle the question of bathrooms and legal issues and so on. It could also be parents going overboard and influencing him, as others have pointed out.
