good movie but it was sad 
I can't watch movies that are sad more than once. Like I am Legend, I can't watch the movie ever again just because of the scene where he has to kill his dog and they play 3 little birds by Bob Marley

Its underrated as in..it never gets mentioned when people/critics list their all time fav movies..when it should be.
ITS A BLACK MOVIE a black movie on IMDB with a 7.7 is insanely high what list or you mentioning, whats your basis for this false statement. Those weak ass movies you are talking about are all white movies, and the black version of those movies get shat on, for example. Ice cubes, Are we there yet has a 4.2 and thats still good for a black movie, if it was an all white cast shyt would easily be a 7 or higher.

My basis? simple...This movie NEVER makes a top 5 spielberg movies of all time.that alone makes it underrated..black or white shouldnt even be an argument here...city of god is not a white movie and its in the top 20..
Just search for a top 5 Spielberg Films on google or something..Color Purple doesnt make it on most lists.

From a technical standpoint it's a well made movie but 
on Spielberg because I thought he missed the entire point of the book. It wasn't about the abuse Celie received from Mister, but it's about the enduring power of friendship even through harsh times. I also hate this movie for what it did to the psyche of Black women in my generation (Gen X) and every generation after that. I feel like Black women internalized that movie maybe more so than any movie. Like, every time my wife watches it she cries and I a ain't gettin' laid that night because she thinks, I'm like Mister, for that brief moment.
on a side note though: Oprah really did her thing in this movie as well as Beloved and I'm surprised she hasn't taken to acting more.

movie is fantastic, but underrated naw. def not underrated by black folk, but thats because its a black movie and a great one at that
